The Hedonistic Rituals of the Unemployed album was a brand new way of recording for the band. Before recording the project, the band met together and hammered out a guiding concept that would allow each person to run wild with a portion of the project while at the same time maintaining a consistent flow by coordinating a reoccurring theme. Thus, The Hedonistic Rituals of the Unemployed is like a play with four acts, with each act consisting of an overture arranged by the band, two song scenes arranged by a single band member, and an instrumental intermission between each section.
The title theme came about when the band was discussing stories of people who, for whatever reason, were unsatisfied with their lives and in an attempt to compensate were constantly seeking out new religions, activities, hobbies, and rituals that might be able to fill the voids in their lives. As with most songs that Just Plain Bill composes, the band continually asked themselves "what if?". In this context the questions were about what beliefs, either orthodox or unorthodox, might attract people searching for fulfillment?
With four different people directing each section differently without concern for the other sections differences, the potential for a disjointed project was evident (as demonstrated in this sentence). With two instrumentals already recorded as experiments, the band decided two more would provide segues between each member’s individual production efforts. Patrick wrote, scored, and produed the instrumentals while the other members played and collaborated on the mix.
One of the notable aspects of this album was the extensive use of outside musicians, more so than on any other Just Plain Bill album. Horn players, a cellist, additional singers provided a large palette for this very colorful album.
